A LACK of transportation at several district offices on Vanua Levu is affecting government service delivery to rural communities.
While raising the issue, Rural and Maritime Development Minister Mosese Bulitavu said Kubulau in Bua was among the worst affected areas, with officers travelling on buses to carry out their duties.
“There are a few district offices in Vanua Levu that currently do not have transportation, especially our Kubulau station,” he said.
“At the moment, our district officers use buses to travel and serve the community, and from the briefing I received upon entering the Northern Division, it was clear that transportation is a major issue.”
Mr Bulitavu said the ministry was now taking steps to address the situation by securing a vehicle and driver for Kubulau.
Efforts are also underway to reassign vehicles from Suva to help assistant district officers operating in remote areas.
“These officers need reliable transport to navigate the rough terrain and effectively serve the people on the ground.”
He said transportation challenges had been included in the ministry’s budget submission to the Ministry of Finance, while interim measures were being implemented to ease the situation.
He said improving transport access was critical to ensuring government services reached rural and maritime communities efficiently.
