WHERE is the promise that the municipal election would be held in the first 100 days or within six months?

Opposition member of Parliament Parveen Kumar directed this question at Government while speaking in Parliament on the Rakiraki Town Council Annual Report for the year 2019.

“Fijians were promised before and during elections for a municipal election, and the people trusted them at that point in time and voted for them – that the municipal elections would be held in the first 100 days or within six months,” Mr Kumar said.

“I ask, where is that promise?

“In fact, it was a total lie. It is also against the Electoral Act 116 (4C).

“I’ll put that matter to rest. May be Attorney-General can look into that.”

In response, Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa said “the local government election will be held”.

“He (Mr Kumar) has the audacity to come and ask this house about when we are going to have local government election,” Mr Nalumisa said.

“In the last sitting, I was waiting for him to ask me that question.”

He said the question was asked during an earlier sitting and Mr Kumar was not present in Parliament that day.

“The question was, when will the local government election be held?

“But he was not here. I presented my response on when the local government election be held?

“I tell you; the local government election will be held.”
