GIRLS must be protected from unsafe relationships and exploitation so they can complete their education and achieve their aspirations, Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Sashi Kiran said.

Ms Kiran delivered the message to Veiuto Primary School Year 7 and 8 students during the 2026 International Day of the Girl Child celebration at the Suva Grammar School hall yesterday.

The celebration was held under the theme “End child marriage and invest in girls’ rights”.

She said although Fiji’s legal marriage age was 18, concerns remained about girls under that age entering relationships with older men.

“Many do not complete their education, get pregnant and have great difficulty in survival when relationships breakdown as they don’t have education or skills to cope,” she said.

She encouraged girls to recognise their worth, take pride in their cultural identity and remain focused on their future.

“Your culture is not a limitation; it is your shield.”

“Each one of you is uniquely special and talented.”

She also warned students about strangers who offered gifts and made promises online, urging them not to share personal information or private photographs.

“Never share your address, phone number, school details, or private photos.”

Ms Kiran reminded children that they should speak to trusted adults if they felt unsafe, were bullied online or experienced abuse.

“Real strength is about kindness, respect, and protecting those who need help.”

“Our PM came from a rural village, I came from a conservative family in rural village, each one of you can reach the skies but that means keeping focus, competing with your own self to get to your goals.”
