Strong winds associated with Category 5 Tropical Cyclone Kevin fell a royal Poinciana (Christmas) tree and flattened a four-bedroom corrugated iron and timber house in Naikabula, Lautoka, on Saturday.

Luckily, no one was hurt during the incident.

Homeowner Vimlesh Kumar said his two children aged 15 and 7 were at home when the incident happened around 4pm.

“I was shopping in town and my wife was at work when I got a call from my elder brother informing me about it,” Mr Kumar said.

He said he rushed home and to his relief found both his children safe and unhurt.

“All the bedrooms were completely destroyed.

“Everything inside the house — television, sofa, electrical appliances, beddings, clothes — have been destroyed.

“We are pleading with the government, public and relevant authorities to assist us in rebuilding our home as we cannot do it on our own.

“This is just the effects of the strong winds, I cannot imagine what TC Kevin would have done if it had changed its track towards Fiji.”

Mr Kumar said the district officer Lautoka visited them and said they would assist the family.
