DEPUTY Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica has played down speculation about him becoming the next leader of the People’s Alliance Party, saying his immediate focus is on delivering for the people and preparing for the next general election.
Mr Kamikamica was responding to comments by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka naming him as a possible successor to lead the party.
While he was honoured to be considered, he said Mr Rabuka remained the leader of the party and succession was not his priority.
“I’m certainly honoured to be considered, but for me right now, he is the leader of the party, so that’s not a preoccupation for me. The important thing is that we focus, as a country and as a party, on continuing to deliver for the people and focusing on the election.”
Asked whether he believed he had the capabilities to lead the party, he said that decision should be left to the people.
“I’ll leave that for the country and the people to decide.”
He said his priority was to take on the portfolios Mr Rabuka had returned to him. He also confirmed he would contest the next election and work alongside Mr Rabuka.
“We will focus on fighting the elections together.”
