Fiji’s Sports World Under-20 side were taught a harsh lesson in discipline and execution after suffering a heavy 53-17 defeat to Australia in their second Pool D clash at the World Rugby U20 Championship in Georgia yesterday.
The Junior Wallabies were clinical from the outset, storming to a 36-3 halftime lead and putting the contest beyond Fiji’s reach.
Australia’s dominance was built on structure, precision and patience.
Their kicking game pinned Fiji deep in their own half while their set-piece laid the platform for repeated attacking raids.
Fiji showed glimpses of their trademark flair, especially in the second spell, but costly errors and defensive lapses proved too much to overcome.
Discipline again hurt the young Fijians, with penalties and yellow cards handing Australia momentum and valuable field position.
The set-piece also came under pressure, denying Fiji the quality possession needed to build sustained phases.
Defensively, Fiji struggled to contain Australia’s width and speed, with the Wallabies exposing gaps out wide.
For Fiji, the message is simple — they must get their act together before their final pool match against or risk going home from the tournament without a win.
Improvements in discipline, set-piece accuracy and defensive organisation will be crucial if they are to finish their campaign on a positive note.
