The Labasa Town Council special administrator Paul Jaduram says the deferment of municipal elections is a timely and practical response to ongoing fuel and economic pressures affecting the country.

Mr Jaduram said Government acted within its responsibilities in postponing the polls, describing the decision as appropriate under current conditions.

“I think the decision is quite timely because of the fuel crisis and the pressures it has created,” he said.

While acknowledging public calls for elections, he said municipal administrations continued to carry out their duties effectively.

“I know it has been a long time, but that does not mean the current administrators are not doing their job.”

He said councils must now operate within strict budgets while ensuring services continue uninterrupted.
