High Court convicts man for raping 5-year-old cousin

A 25-YEAR-OLD man was today found guilty by the High Court in Suva for raping his 5-year-old cousin.

Judge Justice Thushara Rajasinghe has refused the man’s bail after the Assistant DPP Dato Shyamala Alagendra objected to bail on the grounds that the man will be sentenced for a very serious crime.

The court heard that the man raped his 5-year-old cousin brother on July 16, 2017, in Navuso.

Justice Rajasinghe  said the prosecution’s evidence was reliable and they had proven their case beyond reasonable doubt.

Ms Alagendra also informed the court that she will be seeking a higher sentence in this matter.

The case has been adjourned to December 17, for sentencing.
