FIJI Airways Fiji 7s rep Aminiasi Tuimaba admitted that the USA team’s strike weapon, Perry Baker, is faster than him.
But the Vio flyer said he was happy to shut Baker down in the final of the South Africa 7s in Cape Town on Sunday.
Speaking from his home on Vio Island off Lautoka where he was accorded a traditional welcome ceremony after returning with the team yesterday, Tuimaba said the battle against Baker brought out the best in him.
“Baker is really fast and he is faster than me,” Tuimaba said.
“Through good coaching and confidence, I managed to shut him down which also boosted my game in the tournament.
“I don’t want my family to be ashamed of my performance, so I played my heart out for them.”
He said the reception of the children at his home on Vio Island yesterday made him emotional.
“I didn’t expect such reception from those at home, especially the young ones. I thank them for their support and they inspired me to continue working hard when I am given the opportunity to represent my country.”
He thanked former national 7s skipper Isake Katonibau and 7s assistant coach Saiyasi Fuli for helping him.
“I didn’t believe that I would be in the Fiji 7s team this fast. I was aiming for the Sukuna Bowl, but I thank the Almighty Lord for His blessings and plans.
“It is the dream of every Fijian rugby player to represent the country and I am humbled to be one of the fortunate ones.”
Meanwhile, all new caps Ratu Meli Derenalagi, Filimoni Botitu, Tuimaba and Beniamino Vota were treated to a feast at their villages yesterday.
