A heavy rain alert remains in force across the country as forecasters warn of worsening weather conditions from later today, with the risk of flash flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas.

In its latest bulletin issued at 5.30am today from the National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi, the weather office said occasional showers are expected over Serua-Namosi, Navua-Suva-Nausori, Tailevu-Naitasiri-Ra, eastern Macuata, Cakaudrove, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, the Lau and Lomaiviti groups, Kadavu and nearby islands.
Elsewhere around the country, cloudy periods and some showers are expected.
Forecasters warned that isolated thunderstorms with heavy falls are likely, with showers expected to become frequent and develop into rain from later today.
The weather office said localised and persistent heavy rain could trigger flash flooding in vulnerable areas.
Moderate to fresh northeasterly winds are expected, becoming northwesterly later today, while seas are forecast to remain moderate to rough.
The outlook for Monday indicates rain and thunderstorms will continue across the country, with the threat of heavy falls and flash flooding remaining in place.
Authorities are advising members of the public to remain alert, monitor weather updates and take necessary precautions, particularly those living in flood-prone communities.
