More than 60 people are reportedly caught up in an alleged scam promising money from America by helicopter in exchange for a piece of their hair and a photograph.

Police have confirmed receiving reports from people who say they were scammed, with investigations now underway.

Police spokesperson Wame Bautolu confirmed the reports but said the total amount of money allegedly taken from victims had not been established.

“Police have received reports on people being scammed and are working towards investigating the matter,” he said.

The alleged scheme reportedly involved individuals being approached and asked to provide personal items, including a photograph and a piece of their hair.

They were allegedly promised money or other financial returns that would be delivered from America by helicopter.

More than 60 people are understood to have potentially fallen victim, although police have yet to confirm the exact number of complainants or the total financial loss.

The alleged scam has raised concerns over tactics used to exploit people through promises of quick and substantial financial rewards.

Police are continuing investigations into the reports.

Members of the public are being urged to exercise caution when approached with unusual schemes seeking personal information, photographs or physical items in exchange for promised money or other rewards.
