Grandmother dies in crash

A family from Buca Village, Vanua Levu, is grieving after a tragic road accident on Tuesday near Nasue Settlement in Vunilagi claimed the life of Selai Ragata, a grandmother believed to be in her 60s.

Ms Ragata was travelling home from Savusavu with her children and grandchildren after replacing a lost bank card used for social welfare assistance.

Their vehicle collided with another car travelling from Qaravutu towards Savusavu.

According to police, the accident occurred when the vehicle Ms Ragata was in veered onto the opposite lane, colliding with an oncoming car.

She and two children were rushed to Savusavu Hospital, where Ms Ragata was pronounced dead.

The children, along with her daughter Mereoni and son Tomasi, remain hospitalised.

Ms Ragata is survived by her husband, Pauliasi Qaqa, five children, and 11 grandchildren.

Police said the suspect driver will be questioned as investigations continue.

The crash is the first road fatality for the year, compared to zero for the same period last year.
