The Ministry of Health and Medical Services is urging Fijians to take precautions following a marked increase in influenza-like illnesses and acute respiratory infections across the country.
Health surveillance has recorded a rise in cases over the past three weeks, while laboratory testing has confirmed increased seasonal influenza activity.
The Ministry is advising people who are sick to stay home and avoid spreading the virus to others.
Members of the public are also encouraged to
cover coughs and sneezes.
Wash hands regularly with soap and water or use hand sanitiser.
Avoid crowded places where possible.
Wear a face mask in public when sick.
Common influenza symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, fatigue and a runny nose.
The Ministry is advising people to seek immediate medical attention if they experience difficulty breathing, chest pain or heaviness, confusion, severe vomiting or other concerning symptoms.
Health authorities said influenza activity would continue to be monitored and urged Fijians to take simple precautions to protect themselves, their families and the wider community.
