The 2024 Sheraton Golf Classic teed off successfully over two venues yesterday, with the Red Team playing at Denarau Golf Course and the Blue Team at Natadola Bay Golf Course.
About 240 golfers — 40 locals and 200 international participants —competed under bright and sunny skies, making for perfect conditions and an on-time start.
Highlighting the action from the Red Team at Denarau, defending champion James Gordon got off to a strong start on day one. In a standout performance, he shot an impressive 64, finishing eight under par on the par-72 course. Close behind was James Hook, who shot 65.
Surprisingly, local professional Tomasi Tuivuna was third favourite after shooting 66, while another international golfer, Zachary Maxwell, shot 67.
Women’s golfer Lisa Jean also emerged as a favourite, shooting 67.
Tournament coordinator Bronwyn Russel said golfers were excited yesterday.
“About 200 international golfers were excited to get out in the winter weather, it’s always a treat for them.
“We have professional and amateur golfers, three pro and one amateur in each group so there’s a team event which includes pro and amateur.
“There are many prizes up for grabs in this tournament. One of the main objectives of this tournament is sports tourism.
“Having international golfers play alongside locals is wonderful.
“We thank Sheraton for supporting this tournament for a long time,” Russel said.
Russel said many golfers who had participated in the tournament had gone to compete in major tournaments such as the US Open and returned to play in the Sheraton Classic tournament.
“It’s a good combination of locals and international golfers,” Russel said.
