THE high cost and lack of availability of Braille machines in Fiji have long posed a challenge for students at the Fiji School for the Blind, but a new donation is set to give them greater independence in their learning.
The Rotary Club of Suva Peninsula Sunset donated Perkins Braille machines, musical instruments and a freezer to the school following a wish list submitted by Fiji Society for the Blind executive director Barbara Farouk.
Ms Farouk said the support came at a critical time as the machines were not available locally and were too expensive for the school to purchase.
She said sourcing the equipment from overseas was a major challenge.
“This is a very big help for our students to learn independently,” she said.
Ms Farouk said one machine costs about $US800 and about $1800 to land in Fiji.
The donation also included ukuleles and guitars to support students’ musical talents, as well as a freezer for the hostel.
“We are very grateful to the Rotary Club for choosing our school and for responding to what our children really need.”
Ms Farouk said the donation would allow students to read, write and learn with greater confidence.
She said the equipment would provide students with essential tools to support their education while also giving them opportunities to develop their talents through music.
