A joint search and rescue operation is underway for a 68-year-old man from Udu Village, Totoya in Lau, who failed to return after heading out to sea on Thursday.
Fiji Police said the man had left the village in his new white fibreglass boat, named JAHAZIAH, to conduct a test run from Udu towards the Cakauloaloa Reef.
He failed to return to the village, prompting his wife to report him missing.
“The matter was reported by his wife, whereby a search party was formed,” Police said.
Search efforts involving the Republic of Fiji Navy, Police and surrounding communities are now underway.
“The Rescue Coordination Center Fiji is currently coordinating the search with a navy vessel deployed to assist,” Police said.
Authorities are also appealing to maritime communities to remain vigilant and assist with any information that could help locate the missing man or his vessel.
“Maritime communities are requested to call 1681 should they have information,” Police said.
