Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) leader Viliame Gavoka has dashed hopes of a large number of SODELPA supporters calling for him to step aside to allow the more “popular” Sitiveni Rabuka to continue as party leader.

He said he was not stepping down but would instead work with Mr Rabuka to claim victory at the 2022 polls.

He also dismissed claims he would be ineffective in the role because of his relationship with Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

“Family is family and politics is politics,” was how the newly-appointed leader summed up his relationship with his son-in-law.”
