The SportsWorld Fiji U20 campaign at the World Rugby Under-20 Championship began on a disappointing note after suffering a 45-15 loss to France in their Pool D opener in Kutaisi, Georgia yesterday.

The young Fijians showed flashes of brilliance, but costly discipline, poor execution and a dominant French forward pack proved too much to overcome.

It was always going to be a tough assignment against one of the tournament heavyweights, but Fiji made life harder for themselves with three yellow cards and a mounting penalty count that disrupted any chance of building pressure.

France capitalised clinically.

Hooker Gabin Garault crossed for three tries, all coming from close-range forward dominance as Fiji struggled to contain the French maul and set piece.

The warning signs were there early.

Fiji found it difficult to secure clean possession from the scrum and lineout, forcing the backs to work off slow ball and limiting the attacking flair they are renowned for.

Handling errors also hurt.

Several promising attacking movements broke down through unforced mistakes, allowing France to regain possession and control territory.

Despite the heavy defeat, Fiji never stopped fighting.

Epeli Roseruvakula and Mosese Tabuakoto crossed for second half tries to give the side something to build on.

Those moments showed the natural attacking instincts that remain a weapon for the team.

But if Fiji are to challenge in their remaining pool matches against Australia and Spain, discipline and set-piece efficiency must improve.

At this level, raw talent is not enough – precision and composure are just as important.
