Food safety inspectors have uncovered a number of hygiene and food-handling concerns during joint inspections at the Hibiscus Festival.

The inspections were conducted by the Council in partnership with the Suva City Council to assess food vendors’ compliance with food safety and hygiene requirements.

Among the concerns identified were uncovered food, improper use of personal protective equipment by food handlers, open rubbish bins and poor hygiene in cooking areas.

Inspectors also found cracked eggs being used, frozen food stored directly on the floor, flies in food preparation areas and near-expiry food products being sold.

The affected food operators were cautioned and instructed to address the issues and maintain proper food safety, hygiene, storage, handling and product management practices.

Authorities reminded consumers that they have the right to safe food, while businesses have a responsibility to ensure food prepared and sold to the public is safe and suitable for consumption.

Consumers can report food safety concerns through the National Consumer Toll-Free Line on 155.
