Fiji side stamps mark at Youth Games

The Fiji men’s 7s side the Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago has stamped their marks as the teams to beat after recording huge wins in the opening matches of the tournament.

The side recorded big wins yesterday thumping Jamaica 91-nil and Scotland 32-5.

In the men’s first game on Monday, they managed to beat the games host, Trinidad and Tobago 51-0 before defeating Canada 40-5.

The Lasarusa Senibale-coached side consists of players who were part of schools competing in the Vodafone Deans Trophy competition.

Unfortunately, Fiji’s women’s 7s side lost their first game by skin of teeth to Canada, 19-17, but was able to make a comeback in their second, beating Wales 21-15.

They also managed to beat Kenya 38-5 and Trinidad and Tobago, 54-0.

The Fiji women’s side had its semi-final against favorites Australia at 6.50am today.

A total of 34 athletes and players left Fiji last week to compete at the seventh Commonwealth Youth Games that started on August 4 and will end on August 11.
