Fiji has been ranked 96 out of 193 countries on the Government AI Readiness Index, states the report The State of Artificial Intelligence in the Pacific Islands released by the AI Asia Pacific Institute based in Singapore.

This index evaluates governments’ capabilities to effectively deploy AI in public service delivery by three criteria: the government’s AI strategy, the innovation of the technology sector, and the quality of data and infrastructure.

“The Pacific Islands that are scored show a significant disparity compared to Australia and New Zealand, with a 13.44 difference in total score between New Zealand and Nauru, the highest-ranking country from the Pacific Islands,” states

“Aside from Nauru and Fiji, the remaining countries in the Pacific Islands are ranked outside the top 100 and generally show lower levels of development across all pillars.”

“Several factors contribute to this, including the geographical dispersion and small populations of these islands, and the distance from major international markets.”

“Moreover, the exclusion of seven islands from the index due to the lack of data availability underscores the difficulties in collecting ICT-related data in this region.”
