FROM the rugby fields of Nadi to the international men’s netball arena, 27-year-old Fiji Men’s defender Semesa Wainidroa has carved out a unique sporting journey driven by family, sacrifice and determination.

The younger brother of former Fiji men’s netball midfielder Vilive Wainidroa and former Fiji Pearls defender Alisi Galo, Semesa grew up in a household where sport was part of everyday life.

But netball was never part of the original plan.

“I played rugby from under-9 to under-13 and later basketball,” he said.

It was during his secondary school years that he was introduced to netball, a move that would eventually shape his future.

“That’s where I realised I was capable of doing other things.”

Known for his competitive nature, Wainidroa quickly adapted to the sport and has since represented Fiji in several international test series.

Apart from netball, he has also represented Fiji in basketball and handball, showcasing his versatility as an athlete.

Coming from a humble family background, Waqanidroa credits his parents and grandparents for supporting his sporting dreams financially and emotionally.

“Seeing all of us represent Fiji in netball has been overwhelming. We owe everything to our parents for the way they raised us.”

Despite facing challenges such as limited financial support and criticism, the Nadi defender continues to push forward.

“Don’t let negativity stop you from trying,” he said when asked about his message to young athletes.

Now preparing for Fiji’s upcoming test series against Tonga in the Netball Fiji Men’s Invitational tournament, Wainidroa said the team was excited for the challenge.
