No methanol or illicit substances were detected in the cocktails consumed by seven people who fell ill at a Coral Coast resort last weekend.

Tourism Minister Viliame Gavoka made this comment at a press conference in Suva last night as he said all seven had been discharged.

He said the findings that there was no alcohol poisoning was welcome news for Fiji and the tourism industry and brought the reassurance that Fiji was a safe destination.

Health Ministry permanent secretary Dr Jemesa Tudravu said their own investigations were still ongoing.

He said there were many causes for the symptoms exhibited by the seven people and once the root cause was determined, they would inform those affected first.

Mr Gavoka also asked Fiji’s friends from foreign governments to review their travel advisories and remove terms such as “spiking” and precautionary advice which could deter people from travelling to Fiji.

Other investigations are continuing.
