THE temporary taxi fare adjustment has been extended for another six months by the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission.
This means the extension will end on March 31, 2027.
In a statement, FCCC explained the decision was made after receiving submissions from the zonal taxi and individual taxi operators.
“FCCC is also mindful of ongoing geopolitical tensions and the impact that higher transportation costs would have on Fijian households,” the statement said.
“Some taxi operators requested increases above the current temporary charge.
“While FCCC recognises the cost pressures facing the industry, its assessment did not support increasing the temporary adjustment at this stage.
“Maintaining the current adjustment appropriately balances affordability for consumers together with the sustainability of taxi services.”
Fiji Zone Taxi Association acting president Mohammed Shameem welcomed the decision by FCCC adding it provided some temporary relief for operators.
“The cost of everything is rising and we have to meet these new costs, so we are grateful that the FCCC has decided to extend the fare adjustment,” he said.
The commission has advised operators not to recalibrate their taxi meters for the time being.
“The extension is intended to support the continued viability and sustainability of taxi services while balancing the interests of both taxi operators and consumers,” the FCCC statement read.
“Should international fuel prices stabilise or decline, the FCCC will reassess any temporary measures as appropriate.”
