Falling dam levels a ‘concern’

FIJI’S electricity supply is coming under growing pressure as falling water levels at Monasavu Dam raise concerns over hydroelectric generation amid prolonged dry weather.

Meteorological Services Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau said Energy Fiji Ltd (EFL) had raised concerns over the situation and would provide further updates as conditions developed.

“I cannot make specific technical answers, that’s for Energy Fiji Limited, but overall, the level of water, as already indicated by EFL, is a concern,” he said.

Ro Filipe said EFL would continue to monitor the situation and advise the public on electricity supply and measures that could be taken to mitigate the impact of the dry conditions.

He urged Fijians to conserve both water and electricity, saying households should prepare for the possibility of prolonged dry weather.

“Definitely, it’s something that we have to prepare for.

“We have to be ready in terms of the El Niño weather phenomenon as we move forward, given the variations in weather.”

Ro Filipe said Fiji had experienced prolonged dry spells and recent rainfall was not sufficient to replenish hydroelectric sources and other water supplies in the North and West.

He said Government was working with the Water Authority of Fiji, EFL and the National Disaster Management Office to strengthen mitigation measures and contingency plans should the situation worsen. Authorities were closely monitoring water levels and weather conditions and would determine when additional measures were required, including processes that could be activated if the situation escalated to a national disaster level.

Ro Filipe also encouraged households to consider investing in water tanks and to use electricity and water more carefully.

EFL’s hydro system supplied electricity to about 227,607 customers in 2025, most of them households and businesses in the country’s major centres.

The dam has a generating capacity of 80MW and an annual energy yield of 400GWh, according to EFL.
