Eye on drivers

SPEED cameras are being installed along the highway at various locations on Viti Levu.

Land Transport Authority CEO Naisa Tuinaceva said this year 13 speed cameras would be permanently erected to deter lead-footed drivers.

“Excessive speed is a major threat to safety on our roads, but the LTA is hopeful that the installation of the permanent speed cameras will act as a deterrent to drivers to be cautious while driving at all times,” he said.

He encouraged motorists to drive at a safe speed.

“The speed cameras will become operational in due course.

“The biggest challenge for LTA is trying to change people’s carefree attitude towards road safety. However, we can’t do it alone.

“We urge everyone to take responsibility of making our roads safe for all of us.”

More than 50,000 traffic infringement notices have been issued to motorists this year.

A total of 496 drink-driving arrests were made by police between January 1 and September 2, this year.

And the road death toll stands at 38 compared with 44 for the same period last year.
