Expert advice for firms

ABOUT 30 seafood and fisheries entrepreneurs are part of a three-day workshop in Suva to gain expert advice on communicating their business and developing their relationship with current and potential investors.

Going Green Enterprises representative Tevita Caginitoba said the meeting enabled the newly-established company to make its mark in the industry.

“The company was established in February this year and our business deals with sea cucumbers,” he said.

“The skills learnt here will enable us to get more investors into our company as our market is local but we are in the process of trying to export our product.

“This workshop really opens up opportunities and I have also gained more insight into the importance of sustainability, especially in the business that we are in.”

The workshop is facilitated by FISH 2.0 directors Monica Jain and Remy Garderet, who said the organisation strived to encourage businesses to create positive environmental and social change.

“With the right investments and connections businesses in the sustainable seafood sector can grow faster and take advantage of new markets, yet many of them struggle to connect with investors,” Ms Jain said.

Mr Garderet said investors were increasingly drawn to sustainable seafood ventures but had not developed expertise in the seafood sector.

While opening the workshop on Monday, US ambassador to Fiji Judith Cefkin said it was critical that countries ensured that fish stocks were sustained for future generations.

Participants from nine Pacific countries are part of the workshop, which ends today.
