Nineteen-year-old Fiji swimmer Don Younger will make his Commonwealth Games debut in Glasgow, Scotland, competing in the 50m,100m,200, backstroke events.
For Younger, representing Fiji on one of the biggest stages in sport is the realization of a dream that began in childhood.
“Qualifying for the team, for me personally, it’s been a huge goal,” he said.
“Ever since I was small, I’d see these gang go overseas and represent Fiji, so it’s always been motivating.”
Ahead of his first Commonwealth Games appearance, Younger admits to a mix of excitement and nerves as he prepares to test himself against some of the best swimmers.
“I’m very excited. I’m nervous as well. I represent Fiji on such a big international stage – the butterflies are butterflying,” he said.
While his recent local performance was not at his peak, Younger said his focus has always been on building towards this moment.
“Everything I’ve been doing since last year has been coming up to this competition. Everything is a steppingstone towards this,” he said.
His goals in Glasgow are straightforward, deliver personal best times while making most of the experience.
“My minimum is just to swim as fast as I can and get a personal best in almost all my events. I must remember to have fun as well,” he said. Younger credited his coach and teammates for playing a major role in his journey, saying their support and tough training sessions helped prepare him for this level.
