Strengthening Fiji’s overseas diplomatic missions remains a key priority for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade following the allocation of about $56.5million in the 2026–2027 National Budget.
Minister Sakiasi Ditoka said the ministry was satisfied with the allocation given current fiscal constraints.
“We could actually ask for a bit more, but we understand the current situation that we’re in, as far as the fiscal space is concerned,” he said.
He said work had already begun on key priorities, particularly strengthening Fiji’s overseas missions.
According to Mr Ditoka, focus areas include establishing and upgrading missions in Brussels, Canberra and London.
“We’re focusing on getting Brussels up and running by the end of the year.
We’re looking at Canberra as well, as well as London.”
He said support would also be directed to other missions, including Jakarta and Jerusalem, particularly in providing vehicles, logistics and operational assistance.
“That’s where most of our support will be going, as well as supporting our missions in going overseas and representing us in those priorities.”
Mr Ditoka said the ministry would operate within its allocation and ensure careful and efficient use of resources.
“We’re grateful for whatever we’re given, trying to make the best of it.”
He also expressed support for the Government’s fiscal approach, including the 70 per cent operational and 30 per cent capital expenditure mix, saying ministries would need to maintain discipline in spending to meet long-term budget goals.
