Fifteen Papua New Guinea students living in Suva are keeping their fingers crossed and hoping the restrictions associated with COVID-19 will end soon.

They arrived in January this year to pursue a Marine Engineering Class Three course at the Fiji Maritime Academy in Nasese.

The group has taken measures to protect themselves from COVID-19 and this includes the ban of visitors to their flat.

They also have mandatory handwashing and make every effort to practise social distancing.

Speaking on behalf of the students, Jordan Latumahina, 26, said they hoped to graduate this year.

“We sacrificed a lot to come here and we hope everything will normalise soon so that we can resume classes,” the East New Britain province lad said.

“We want to graduate and go back home, this is our future and our career depends on this. At the moment, we are surviving on our allowance and so far, there is no problem with food.

“We have been in contact with family every day via social media, informing them about our situation because we don’t want them to worry.”

He said they had adhered to the instructions from Government.

“We are just following the instructions from the Fijian Government on the lockdown and curfew for our own safety.”

Suva is presently on lockdown and Government has imposed a nationwide curfew from 8pm to 5am.
