Fiji Police sought the assistance of the military in the Lautoka area yesterday to comb the inner bank of Sabeto River in Nadi after it heard rumours that people were crossing the border using waterways during the Lautoka lockdown.

Commissioner Brigadier-General Sitiveni Qiliho said if need be, punts and boats would also be used, including deploying the military unit in Nadi to patrol the outer bank of the Sabeto River.

“We are looking at employing some technology in also keeping a hawk’s eye on some of the areas that we think other movements might be happening,” Brig-Gen Qiliho said at yesterday’s government briefing.

“We continue to reevaluate the situation on the ground so that things don’t stop.

“Initially we were trying very hard to get all the essentials in there (Lautoka). There are talks of some fuel that may be running low in some of the gas stations around the country.”

Last Friday, he said it was not so hectic so they were able to get more fuel trucks out of Vuda.

The ComPol said the priority areas remained to be the essential services, and authorities were working with FCCC that was carrying out a survey within the Lautoka area to identify things that needed to be moved in.
