Hibiscus Festival 2026 contestant Nicole Matavesi spent Senior Citizens Day serving Fiji’s senior citizens at the Civic Centre in Suva, saying young people must lead by example through community service.
Ms Matavesi joined volunteers in celebrating senior citizens day, describing it as an “incredible experience.”
“It also taught me a lot about community service and the work that we should be continuing to do,” she said.
The contestant, who advocates for youth-led sustainability, said caring for the elderly is part of building a sustainable Fiji.
“We are leading sustainability by being able to take care of our elderly and ensuring that we understand how we want to be cared for in future.”
“It’s really important that our youth understand the importance of looking after our elderly and being able to be someone to love them, cherish them and appreciate them.”
Speaking to the elderly at the Civic Centre, 60-year-old Sulia Vurata from Tailevu shared her hope that senior citizens would be protected and cared for.
“Some families love and protect their elderly; some may not. My hope is that these children will protect and take care of us.”
Wiliame Bera Kaitani, 80, a retired doctor who lives in Tamavua, said the event was a great opportunity for elderly people to come together and meet other senior citizens.
“I really like it because it’s the first time, I’ve come to enjoy myself and meet my other QVS former classmates from back then. Hopefully, we have another one next year.”
