Minister for Defence and Veterans Affairs Pio Tikoduadua has announced his support for the reappointment of Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai as Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF).
In a statement on social media, Tikoduadua said the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC) had formally consulted him on the appointment, as required under the Constitution.
“Section 131(4) of the Constitution requires that I be consulted as Minister for Defence & Veterans Affairs, in the appointment of the Commander of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces.”
The Defence Minister said he had informed the Commission of his strong support for Kalouniwai to continue in the role when his current five-year term expires later this year.
“I am glad to inform the people of Fiji that the Constitutional Offices Commission has consulted me on the matter and I have indicated my strong support of the re-appointment of Major General Kalouniwai at the end of his first 5 year contract that is set to expire later this year.”
Tikoduadua also revealed that he met with the RFMF Commander on Tuesday afternoon to personally convey his support.
“This afternoon, I met with the Commander in my office and have relayed to him the same.”
He concluded by wishing Major General Kalouniwai well as he continues to lead the military.
“I wish him well in the continuation of his duties to keep the Fijian people safe.”
