A THREE-YEAR rugby development plan organised by two local primary school teachers has been reaping its rewards in the Vodafone Kaji rugby competition in the Suva Zone.

A combined effort from Vatuwaqa Primary School and Vishnu Deo Memorial Primary School in the under-12 and U13 has developed these two grades to proceed to the quarter-finals this Saturday.

A rugby development program implemented in 2016 by school teachers Metui Mucunabitu and Manoa Puamau has been a contributing factor to the players in their buildup to the Kaji rugby competition.

Mucunabitu stressed on the importance of basics to the younger generations to support them in the development of their knowledge in rugby in the competition.

“This program started in 2017 after it was introduced in 2016 and these players were in the under-9 and U10 grades.

“We started with the basics of rugby and it’s rules of passing, attacking skills and defence including the ruck areas and now they’ve shown improvement,” said Mucunabitu.

“One of our players Samuela Koli from Vatuwaqa Primary School has been contracted by Te Puke Elementary school in New Zealand and that has been our biggest achievement and now we want to see the same for these players”

Meanwhile the under-12 team will face Marist Brothers Primary School team one and the under-13 team will meet John Wesley Primary in the quarter-final stages this weekend at St Marcellin Primary School ground in Suva.
