A retired teacher from Rakiraki has called on the Ministry of Education to monitor teachers’ use of personal mobile phones during school hours.

Suramma Mani raised the issue during a public consultation on the Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026 this week, saying education officials should visit classrooms to observe teaching practices and student learning.

“When I give tuition to the students, there are teachers sitting down with their phone, while the children will make noise in the classroom,” she said.

Surmamani claimed she had come across students’ books that she believed had not been marked for one or two weeks.

“So, to the Education Department, please send supervisors to see what’s happening in the classroom.”
