A PROMINENT iTaukei academic has called on Tailevu chiefs to focus on solutions and self-reliance rather than dwelling on the challenges posed by the global fuel crisis.

Speaking at the Tailevu Provincial Council meeting at Nausori Village Hall in Nausori, Tautai (Pro-Chancellor) of the Pacifika Communities University Dr Akanisi Kedrayate encouraged council members to “decolonise” their mindset and make greater use of their land to strengthen food security and sustainable living.

Her comments came after a presentation by the Fiji Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC), which warned of rising prices for goods and services linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Dr Kedrayate said communities needed to shift their thinking away from dependence on imported goods and urban lifestyles.

“We are so dependent on the way of life that was never meant to be for us,” Dr Kedrayate said.

“We need to decolonise ourselves. We shouldn’t focus only on the problem because it can create more difficulties.

“We should all be planting our own food. Why are we running to supermarkets in the cities and towns?

“Why are we complaining about the cost of kerosene when we can forage for firewood?”

Dr Kedrayate said unity and collective action would be key to Tailevu’s progress and resilience in the face of economic pressures.

She also stressed the need for discussions at provincial meetings to result in tangible action.

“What has been discussed in our meetings needs to be implemented.”
