Caught red-handed

A man who climbed a telecommunications tower and scaled a fence to gain entry into a storage site where more than $2billion worth of seized methamphetamine is kept is in police custody.

He was arrested in the early hours of yesterday after he was found in the Fiji Police Mobile Force premises, allegedly trying to interfere with CCTV cameras that oversee the containers in which the drugs are kept.

“We can confirm that a suspect is in custody as investigation is ongoing to ascertain his motive and intention,” said acting Commissioner of Police Sakeo Raikaci.

He said the drugs, which included the four tonnes of methamphetamine seized in Nadi, were well guarded as security at the Fiji Police Mobile Force was at an “enhanced” level.

“The enhanced security measures are closely monitored through our Command Centre which was equipped with the support of the Australian Federal Police.”

Meanwhile, Assistant Commissioner of Police Sakeo Ganivatu told a meeting in Navua yesterday the incident was a clear indication that “there’s a drug network at play, attempting to steal the secured drugs”.
