FIJI’S young people should be known for their talent and achievements rather than drugs, crime and health problems, says Youth and Sports Minister Jese Saukuru.

Mr Saukuru said Fiji had a strong history of producing successful athletes and young people who made positive contributions to the country.

“For many years, Fiji has been recognised internationally for the achievements of our athletes and the positive contributions of our young people through sport,” he said.

However, he said the growing stats of drugs and HIV was changing this picture.

“There is a growing concerns surrounding drugs and HIV. It requires greater awareness and responsible choices among young people.”

To address this, he said their was collective needed from government, civil societies, non-profit organisations, communities and churches.

“Parents and communities need to take a stronger role in guiding and supporting the younger generation.

“The responsibility does not rest with Government alone. Every Fijian has a role to play in protecting our young people and creating a safer and healthier future for them.”

He said investment in young people was an investment in the future of the country.
