Attorney-General Siromi Turaga is urging Fijians concerned about the alleged undeclared assets of certain political figures to “trust the system”.

Mr Turaga said the Fijian Elections Office would follow due process in look into each allegation.

“I just saw it in the media and I think last year it was going on in the media too,” said Mr Turaga.

“The law is there and if you want to stand for elections you must declare.

“To not declare that is material non-disclosure.

“Yes, the FEO rightly will take time to verify these allegations.”

He said individuals who choose to take on political roles need to be transparent.

“One of the issues as Parliamentarians is our financial status.

“We must disclose them. If you do not do it that is the same as being dishonest.

“So rightfully the Acting SOE and her office must investigate but that does not mean that is the reality.

“I just beg the people of Fiji to stop making assumptions.”

This week, allegations of undeclared assets were made against FijiFirst party leader Voreqe Bainimarama, former A-G Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum and President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere.

Acting SOE Ana Mataiciwa confirmed receiving the complaints from an Australian resident.
