Does the current spate of inclement weather brought about through the passing depression before us a learning opportunity?
Come to think about it, with all the flooding in Nadi and Rakiraki, it would make good case studies in our curriculum at primary and secondary schools.
At primary level it could be included in subjects such as social science and basic science.
At secondary level, subjects such as geography would be ideal. Why learn so much about countries far away when examples are before our eyes and our students can relate to this easily.
Other subjects including physics, chemistry, maths, biology and history can incorporate aspects of environmental planning and climate change based on case studies of the Nadi and Rakiraki water catchments.
Let’s hope that leaders in charge of our curriculum support the inclusion of more local examples such as the Nadi and Rakiraki rivers. After all, our children learn better when examples are selected from close to home as compared with overseas-based models and case studies.
