THE Suva City Council should upgrade Albert Park to a standard suitable for hosting major festivals if it intends to continue using the ground for such events, says Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa.

He said the council had a responsibility to restore and improve the ground following damage caused during the 70th Hibiscus Festival.

“If they continue to use Albert Park, then they need to ensure that they, maybe, upgrade the ground in such a way so that when they hold carnivals, the turf is not affected,” he said.

He said the Government could assist with the upgrades if the council lacked funding.

He also said the festival’s 70th anniversary made Albert Park’s use particularly significant for Suva and Fiji.
