“WE”RE not disappointed at all.”

These were the words from Fiji Bulikula head coach Jone Wesele after his side went down 12-18 but pushed the New Zealand Kiwi Ferns in what could be described as a gutsy and head-turning performance last Sunday.

The Bulikula led 12-10 at half time against the second ranked team in the world, showing determination in attack and resilience in defence before New Zealand edged them in the closing stages.

In a post-match interview, Wesele said he was proud of the players’ effort and believed the performance provided a strong foundation for the rest of the tournament.

“It’s amazing to see how relentless they were coming against the second in the world,” Wesele said.

“That is a big statement, but they’ve made their mark today and we’ll work from there.”

Captain Sera Naitokatoka said the team was excited about what lies ahead, with the players encouraged by their ability to challenge one of the world’s leading sides in women’s rugby league.

“To lose by only one try is crazy,” she said.

Naitokatoka credited the team’s unity and faith for helping the players rise to the occasion, saying they had worked hard to build trust and understand one another’s strengths.

The captain also dedicated the team’s efforts to young girls in Fiji and supporters around the world.

The Bulikula will now turn their attention to their next match against the Papua New Guinea Orchids at 2.15pm this Saturday at the Santos National Football Stadium in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
