THE Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NCCI) has proposed that a feasibility study be carried out to determine the ability of Energy Fiji Ltd (EFL) to supply power uninterrupted to all parts of Fiji.

This proposal has been highlighted in the NCCI’s budget submission for the 2019/2020 fiscal year.

NCCI president Dr Ram Raju said frequent sudden power failures were causing losses of productivity and businesses were badly affected.

He said there was unprecedented growth and investments in Nadi, which would stretch EFL’s ability to supply power.

The NCCI has recommended:

  • A master development plan to be discussed and implemented
  • Alternative sources of power supply namely through Hydro dams (many rivers from the interior highlands)
  • Solar, Windmills, Biodegradable green energy and installation of diesel power generators in Nadi
  • Duty concessions for power generators that MSME’s can afford
  • Duty waived for solar power panels and all the accessories that come with it or if possible subsidised
  • Nabou green energy (that seems to be a good alternative power supply) could perhaps be extended all over Fiji, and
  • The windmill farm in Nadroga doesn’t seem to be working at full capacity and there ought to be better sites to install wind farm that has more all-round wind or breeze to power the generators.
