Gusuisavu Bakery ramped up production last Friday after authorities announced the Suva-Nausori lockdown.

Mariana Siliva, the bakery boss, said they remained open until 8pm to cater for the upsurge in demand.

“Most of the villagers from Naitasiri and Namosi always stop by our bakery to buy bread, butter and other groceries like chicken, sausage and canned food,” she said.

“This (last) week, our hardworking bakers made between 21 to 25 dozen loaves a day but it was still not enough to meet the demand. “Before the virus, business was very slow.

“Now, because people have no choice, they are running to us to buy bread and groceries like never before.”

Ms Siliva said the bakery, located along the Sawani-Serea Rd near Waitolu Village, Naitasiri, was owned by the Lovia Cooperative from Gusuisavu.

She said the biggest issue they were facing was flour supply because of the heightened border containment measures enforced by health authorities.
