AS the country kicks off the spending season with the Black Friday and Cyber Monday retail sales, online shoppers are urged to be vigilant against online shopping scams.

Consumers will be looking to snap up bargains but have been advised to be on alert because cybercriminals will also be looking to target those who do not exercise caution, taking advantage of individuals preoccupied with the potential savings rush.

ANZ Fiji Country head Rabih Yazbek said the Black Friday sales period was increasingly growing in popularity and consumers were gearing up for the festive season and take advantage of holiday sales.

He said it was also the perfect time for individuals to sharpen their scam awareness knowledge and stay vigilant when shopping online.

“Cybercriminals thrive during peak retail periods,” he said in a statement yesterday.

“Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales are prime opportunities for scammers to take advantage of eager shoppers who have been holding out for these sales to make their purchases online.

“We urge consumers to be hypervigilant when making purchases during the upcoming sales season.

“We often see fake shopping websites, advertisements or giveaways impersonating reputable retailers, hoping to entice shoppers with big discounts and incredible deals.”

Mr Yazbek said major retail discounts typically encouraged shoppers to act fast to avoid missing out on a good deal.

“Remember – stop, think and consider. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is.”

He said customers should always double check all details were correct and the website they were purchasing from was legitimate.

“If you are ever unsure, call you bank, our teams are available to help.”

Members of the public are advised to trust their instincts, be skeptical of links, check phone numbers, secure online shopping, keep track of their accounts and to stay vigilant with cards and devices.
