Football in Levuka goes all the way back to 1938 where a couple of teams in the area would participate in local competitions on different occasions.

This was highlighted by The Fiji Times on October 7, 1975. It was mostly played by the Indo-Fijian community.

In 1938, when the Fiji Indian Football Association came into existence, these clubs founded the Levuka Indian Soccer Association and sought affiliation.

In fact, Levuka was one of the five foundation members of the Fiji Indian Football Association and participated in the first inter-district tournament in Suva.

Unfortunately, Levuka was unable to continue with the Fiji Indian Football Association the following year.

Despite this major setback, soccer was revived with added enthusiasm in 1941 and Levuka again affiliated with the parent body.

For the next four years, Levuka participated in

the regular inter-district series. Levuka soccer history was created when for the first time the inter-district tournament was held outside Viti Levu at Levuka’s Nasau Park.

Levuka football was proud of that singular occasion which despite her limited facilities to cater for the “huge influx” of visitors was one that was enjoyed by all.

Levuka suffered another lapse from 1945 to 1947 when she was unable to leave home to take part in the inter-district tournament held during those years.

In 1948 Levuka came back, this time winning the prize for the best dressed team.

With the loss of many of their soccer enthusiasts who had left Levuka, they were unable to send representative sides to the annual tournaments held between 1949-1956. In, 1957 Levuka affiliated with the parent body and gamely made a comeback- winning the prize for best dressed team for the second time.

The history would be incomplete without recording thanks to the soccer pioneers of Levuka, prominent amongst whom were: Rev Father Bransfield, Mr Krishna Franklin, Ram Samugh, P. Nagaya, Jaffar Khan, Gulabdas, B. Obed, Rangasami Gounder, V. Williams, Bechu Sadiq and L.Williams.
