Soldiers extended a helping hand to orphans in a mission that brought smiles to two homes outside Suva.
According to an article published by The Fiji Times on May 12, 1994, members of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces donated a total of $2000 to Saint Christopher’s Home at Nakasi and to Dilkusha Home in Nausori.
Each home received $1000, which was raised through a run-a-thon organised by the soldiers. The fundraising effort reflected their commitment to serving the community beyond their military responsibilities.
Major General Sam Pickering led the group at the time and accompanied the soldiers during their visits to both homes.
At Saint Christopher’s Home, the donation was received by Sister Clare Masina, who oversaw the home at the time and cared for the children living there.
The soldiers did more than present the donation. While visiting Saint Christopher’s Home, they cut the grass and cleaned the compound, helping improve the surroundings for the children and easing the workload of the staff.
At the time, both orphanages relied heavily on charitable donations and public support to continue operating. The contributions provided much-needed assistance and helped meet their immediate needs.
The visit also brought joy and excitement to the children, reminding them that they were remembered and supported by the wider community.
The mission was regarded as a success because of the compassion and generosity shown by the soldiers. It demonstrated that service extended beyond military duties and made a meaningful difference in the lives of vulnerable children.
