FIJI Sevens coach Gareth Baber is not wasting any time as the team gears up for the first leg of the 2019-2020 HSBC World Sevens Series in Dubai.

Baber said paying attention to other teams as they prepare was not in his books as he wanted to focus on moving the team forward.

“I don’t spend a lot of time looking over the fence, I just want to have a clear focus on what our team Fiji can do and my whole philosophy on coaching is to ensure that we are elevating our players to be able to play some of the rugby that you see,” said Baber.

“When we don’t hit those heights we want to be humble enough to come back and learn from that process and ensure that they stay on that level again, my job is fixed on ensuring Fiji do what Fiji does,” he added.

Fiji last won in the Dubai sevens in the year 2015, and Baber says history does not play any part in the recent shortcomings of the team as they will try their best to win every match.

“We know that we haven’t performed here as a group in a past few tournaments but that is down to me being here and not the history. We don’t dwell too much on the stats and I am just preparing a team to take on the tournament.

“It’s mostly based around putting into practice what we have talked about and the development we do and how we manage to deliver when the pressure comes,” he said.

Fiji played its first game against Japan earlier this morning and will be playing their second pool match against Argentina at 10.04pm.

The final pool match will be against France at 4.02am on Saturday.
