Fiji’s average June inflation rate remained at -0.5 percent as prices rose sharply during June, according to the Fiji Bureau of Statistics.
The Bureau said the negative average inflation figure reflects the average movement in consumer prices over the past 12 months, while the year-on-year inflation rate for June stood at 6.1 percent.
Transport recorded the largest monthly increase, climbing 10.1 percent as fuel prices, vehicle spare parts, airfares and sea transport costs increased.
The Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas and Other Fuels category rose 5.2 percent, driven by higher electricity, gas and fuel prices.
Prices for Alcoholic Beverages, Tobacco and Narcotics increased 2.4 percent, while Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages rose 1.0 percent, reflecting higher prices for meat, seafood, fruit, vegetables, oils, confectionery and beverages.
Smaller increases were recorded in Furnishings, Household Equipment and Routine Household Maintenance, while Communication and Education remained unchanged.
Meanwhile, prices fell in several categories, with Restaurants and Hotels declining 1.3 percent, Health down 1.1 percent, and smaller decreases recorded in Recreation and Culture, Miscellaneous Goods and Services, and Clothing and Footwear.
The Fiji Bureau of Statistics said Fiji reports inflation using two measures: the average inflation rate over a 12-month period and the year-on-year inflation rate comparing the current month’s prices with those of the same month a year earlier.
