SPEEDING, unsafe overtaking, impatience, and poor judgement can turn an ordinary journey into a tragedy in a matter of seconds, stated the Land Transport Authority (LTA).
Following the double fatality in Navua on Wednesday, the LTA issued a statement calling for motorists to prioritise road safety first rather than arriving early at a certain destination.
“Every road death is a devastating reminder that the decisions we make on the road carry consequences far beyond the moment, no destination is worth risking a life.” the LTA stated.
“While the Land Transport Authority extends its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the two individuals, who tragically lost their lives on our roads, it is strongly urging every road user to adapt a change in mindset as road users, drivers, cyclists, passengers, pedestrians and to exercise greater care, patience and responsibility on our roads.”
The authority is urging motorists to slow down, maintain a safe distance, and only overtake when it is safe and necessary to do so.
“As passengers, speak up when a driver is taking unnecessary risks. As pedestrians and other road users, remain alert and make safety a shared responsibility, take your time, make the right decision, arrive alive.”
It stressed that road safety is about valuing life and not only about following the road rules.
